English & Drama
ELA’s English and Drama course is designed for groups who would like to learn and rehearse a play while studying English with us. The play will then be performed in front of an audience, recorded on video and taken home for the students to remember their time in Edinburgh fondly.
What is ELA’s English for Drama course?
At ELA we believe that learning English doesn’t always happen from a textbook. We have a student-centred approach that places the emphasis on the production of English through stimulating and engaging tasks.
Our tried and tested ‘English for Drama’ programme is a perfect example of this methodology put into practice and it is an approach that teenagers love! It’s the perfect way to introduce learners to the rich tradition of British stage performances. Our qualified tutors work with the students to perform a British play, chosen specially for them or a selection of sketches created by the students themselves. The programme works in four stages:
- Vocabulary – learning the language of the play to unlock its meaning
- Pronunciation – delivering lines with confidence
- Body language and non-verbal communication – developing silent cues to complement the spoken script
- Performance – record the play and take it home to show family and friends
Our syllabuses are bespoke and adaptive to suit whatever time-frame is required, whether it is for a week or a month. We have a range of plays that are popular with groups. Courses can be designed to supplement the preparation for the performance with English language workshops.
