English for Engineering
This course is suitable for engineers and engineering technicians from any field, as they focus on generic technical English – skills and vocabulary that are relevant across a wide range of technical contexts. For example, almost all engineers need to work with technical drawings, discuss dimensions and tolerances, talk about different materials and their properties, describe the shapes of components and how they fit together, describe causes and effects, explain technical problems etc. The language used in these common technical contexts is high-priority. As such, it forms the nuts and bolts of the syllabus of English for Engineering and there's another dimension to generic technical English; many of the key theories of engineering are relevant to more than one field. For instance, the principles of stress and strain apply to the structural elements holding up a skyscraper, and equally to the mechanical components of a car's suspension.
The concepts of energy, work and power are as relevant to electrical supplies and batteries as they are to diesel engines. Aerodynamic drag and turbulence are key issues for aircraft designers, and also for the structural engineers who design bridges and tall chimneys. Therefore, much of the language used to describe the core principles of engineering is generically relevant.
Militaries across the world are co-operating and working together more closely than ever before. Increasingly, the language of co-operation is English, particularly when militaries are co-operating with the United Nations and other international agencies. Edinburgh Language Academy offers a military English course which develops the language skills of the participating soldiers and is measured against NATO's STANAG 6001 framework. The framework ranks students' language skills over 6 levels. Language proficiency is recorded with a profile of 4 digits indicating the specific skills in the following order: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. For example, a soldier's abilities could be listed as 3222. In this case, the soldier's listening skill is stronger than his other skills.
We teach military English over levels 0 to 4 of the framework. The course covers the four skills and develops abilities in contexts commonly met by soldiers working in international situations. For example, a solider studying course level 1 will meet language encountered during military exercises, giving a situation report or participating in briefings. The course will include work in the classroom and excursions to local army reserve bases. Edinburgh Language Academy's military English courses last from three to twelve weeks based on your needs.
